What is an Endowment Fund?

OPEF raises approximately $80,000 each year through a variety of fundraising events. While this annual support is vital, the Endowment plays an equally important role in sustaining our schools. Together, the Annual Donor Drive and the Endowment ensure that the District has both the immediate resources it needs today and the financial stability to support future generations.

The Annual Donor Drive provides flexible funding that can be put to use right away, addressing current needs and opportunities. In contrast, the Endowment offers long-term, reliable support. It is a permanent fund in which donations are invested for sustained growth. These contributions are held in perpetuity, with only a portion of the investment earnings distributed each year—according to a policy established by the Board.

Think of the Endowment like a pension: it provides consistent, annual benefits while preserving the fund’s long-term strength. Meanwhile, the Annual Drive functions more like a paycheck—delivering immediate, spendable income. Together, they form a balanced approach to funding: addressing today’s priorities while building a foundation for tomorrow.

Aiming for a $10,000,000 Endowment could provide $500,000 annually to OPUSD, creating a cushion that is independent of state funding. At $50,000,000, that would provide $2,500,0000 annually of independent funding for our schools.

Our Endowment began in 2008, with $27,490, and currently is at $530,000. This is representative of a year0on-year growth of 20%.

Every dollar counts. Let’s make this a community goal for the future of our schools!
